Insight
Three Pillars is a public pavilion conceived for the Gateways to Chinatown Competition in Manhattan, transforming a high-traffic urban intersection into a cultural gathering place. Inspired by the three philosophical foundations of Chinese civilization, Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism, the project reinterprets the triangular geometry of the site as a symbolic gateway where movement, nature, and community converge. A lightweight bamboo canopy, integrated planting, and flexible public seating create an inviting urban oasis that encourages pause, interaction, and cultural exchange within the dense city fabric.
Idea
The design draws inspiration from the symbolic significance of the number three in Chinese culture, representing harmony, balance, and the philosophical foundations of society. Rather than creating a monument, the proposal transforms an overlooked traffic island into an immersive public landscape where architecture and nature coexist. The flowing bamboo structure and woven canopy guide pedestrian movement while filtering light and framing moments of gathering, allowing the space to function as both an urban gateway and a place for reflection.

Impact
By responding to existing pedestrian movement rather than interrupting it, the pavilion transforms a space of passage into a destination for community life. Seating, planting, and shaded gathering areas encourage people to slow down, interact, and experience Chinatown beyond its streets and storefronts. The integration of flexible solar panels within the canopy supports sustainable energy generation while reinforcing the project's vision of combining cultural heritage, environmental responsibility, and contemporary urban design into a memorable civic landmark.
